General Questions

Everything You Want to Know About Your Roof

Repair & Replacement

If damage is limited to a small area, a few missing shingles, a failed flashing seal, or one isolated leak, a repair is usually the right call. Replacement makes more sense when your roof is over 20 years old, has widespread shingle deterioration, granule loss in your gutters, multiple leak points, or any visible sagging.

The best way to know for certain is a free estimate from Blue Goat Roofing. We'll give you an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.

Most residential roof replacements in The Treasure Valley take one to two days. Larger or more complex roofs, multiple pitches, extensive flashing work, or steep slopes, may take two to three days. We give you a realistic timeline before any work begins, and we stick to it.

Watch for these warning signs, even if your roof looks fine from the ground:

  • Shingles that are curling, cracking, buckling, or missing
  • Granules accumulating in your gutters (means shingles are breaking down)
  • Water stains on your ceiling or in the attic
  • Daylight visible from inside the attic
  • Sagging or uneven roof decking
  • Moss or algae growth (moisture retention accelerates shingle damage)
  • Your roof is over 20 years old

In some cases yes, building codes in Idaho generally allow one layer of shingles to be installed over an existing layer. However, we typically recommend a full tear-off for several reasons: it lets us inspect and replace damaged decking, provides better adhesion for the new shingles, and doesn't add excess weight to the structure. A re-roof over existing shingles also tends to have a shorter lifespan and can void manufacturer warranties.

Costs & Estimates

Material costs for asphalt, steel, and underlayment have increased due to supply chain disruptions, inflation, and higher demand following extreme weather events across the country. Labor costs have also risen as skilled tradespeople become harder to find. Acting sooner rather than later generally saves money, costs are unlikely to come back down significantly.

Yes, always. Our free estimate includes a full roof inspection, a clear explanation of what we find, and a detailed itemized quote. There's no obligation and no pressure. We respond within 1 business day and offer same-week appointments throughout The Treasure Valley.

Most homeowner's insurance policies cover sudden and accidental damage, such as hail, wind, and storm damage, but not normal wear and tear. The key is getting a proper inspection to document the damage correctly. Blue Goat Roofing works directly with your insurance adjuster from start to finish, which significantly improves the outcome of most claims.

Solar Panels & Roofing

Yes, and Blue Goat Roofing is the only local roofing contractor in The Treasure Valley that handles solar panel removal and reinstallation in-house. Most roofers won't touch solar, leaving you to coordinate two separate contractors and manage the scheduling yourself.

We remove your panels, replace the roof, reseal all penetrations properly, and reinstall the panels correctly. One company, one schedule, one point of accountability. This also protects both your roofing warranty and your solar panel warranty.

If your roof is more than 10 years old, yes, strongly recommend it. Installing solar on an aging roof almost guarantees you'll need to pay for panel removal and reinstallation within a few years, which adds significant cost. A new roof before solar installation is a decision most homeowners never regret.

Maintenance & Inspections

Our 13-point inspection covers:

  • Eaves, fascia & soffit
  • Shingle condition
  • Gutter drainability
  • Ventilation cleaning
  • Chimney mortar
  • Skylight inspection
  • Tree damage risk
  • Algae & moss removal
  • HVAC flashings
  • Pest damage
  • Flashing integrity
  • Structural assessment
  • Attic ventilation

Annual maintenance keeps your manufacturer warranty valid and catches problems before they become expensive repairs.

May is ideal. It falls right after winter, when freeze-thaw cycles, snow, and ice dams do their damage, and before the summer heat and contractor rush that make scheduling harder. May also has moderate temperatures that are safe and practical for roof work. That said, we do inspections year-round and can usually schedule within the same week.

Small amounts of algae can often be treated with a low-pressure chemical wash. Moss is more aggressive, it holds moisture against shingles and accelerates deterioration. If moss has been present for multiple seasons or your shingles are already compromised, replacement may be more cost-effective than treatment. A free estimate will tell you which situation you're in.
